Seattle band releases new EP with 17-piece orchestra

November 2nd, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Pop |

Sometimes greatness is subtle; sometimes it reveals itself most brilliantly through its simplicity. Sitting with a cup of coffee (or some good whiskey) and watching the rain fall outside is coupled perfectly by the music of Kris Orlowski, a Seattelite who is slowly but surely turning heads and making himself known; and it’s no doubt why with a voice like his.

And if listening to his voice alone isn’t enough, his vulnerability and unguarded, palpable lyrics are sure to move you. He speaks from the soul about life below the surface, things we wish we heard more of.

On that note (literally), Andrew Joslyn is also a Seattle musician and fully loaded with talent. He has been playing violin since he was 5 and graduated from Berklee College of music with a Masters in Music Business. Now a seasoned performer, composer, and arranger, he has worked with some of the most iconic Northwest musicians and beyond, a few recently being Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

Orlowski and Joslyn have teamed up in order to release a five-song orchestral folk rock record. Pieces We Are is now available on iTunes and you better go get it. Here are a few songs off the EP:

Notable Upcoming Release Shows:
-Hotel Café, Los Angeles (Nov. 9th)
-Hotel Utah, San Francisco (Nov. 10th)
-Williamsburg Knitting Factory, Brooklyn (Dec. 7th)
-NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall (Dec. 8th)

Video: BenniB – What I Have

August 4th, 2012 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

Here’s a new BenniB track and video. “What I Have” is produced by Seattle’s Grimeshine – a very old-school oriented producer… at 22 years old mind you; Old vinyls and a MPC is his style. They shot the video in a very cool record store in Chicago.

Watch “What I Have” below. Download the song here. (more…)

Hidden Gem: Champagne Champagne *seattle hip-hop duo

November 14th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

I first saw Champagne Champagne three years ago at a house show in our hometown Seattle. They spent the better part of the show hanging from the crossbeams, jumping into the audience, and spraying champagne all over everyone and it blew my mind. I had never heard anything quite like it before and I’ve been a fan ever since. I saw them two months ago at Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival and it was as though they took that basement party energy, and found a way to amplify it to work on a stage in front of a thousand people.

While the two MC’s, Pearl Dragon and Sir Thomas Grey, tore up the stage and got the crowd going crazy, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and former Blood Brothers drummer Mark Gajadhar, played the keyboard, guitar, drums, and trigged samples, many times switch around between all four mid song. Their production ranges anywhere from classic RZA-esc Wu-Tang with “Champagne Loves Your Brain”, to an atmospheric dream on “Molly Ringwald”, to disco revival with “What’s Your Fantasy”.

They’re about to embark on a month long, nationwide tour with another Seattle MC Macklemore.

Hidden Gem: Brite Futures *punk rock Abba disco Osmonds with chainsaws

October 27th, 2011 by | Dance, Disco, Hidden Gem, Music Video, New Wave, Rock |

I heard this song back in March on a SXSW 2011 torrent Playlist but recently @DrewShannon hit us up with the official single version which is available FREE to download. “Baby Rain” is off their upcoming album, Dark Past, due out November 1.

Here’s a little about Brite Futures whose name is fitting for the potential their music has:

Dubbed “punk rock Abba disco Osmonds with chainsaws” by the Seattle-based quintet itself, the album’s synth-happy mix of New Wave, rock, funk, and dance music packs all the boundless pep of a hyperactive kindergartener on a never-ending sugar high.”

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – “My Oh My” *A Tribute to a Legendary Baseball Announcer

There is no question that rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis both from Seattle, Washington are very passionate about their city. So it was not a surprise to me to hear their newest track “My Oh My”, which is a tribute to legendary Seattle Mariners announcer, Dave Niehaus, who died last month. I especially loved this song  because I am a huge baseball fan and love when a talented rapper like Macklemore raps about his favorite team. Enjoy!

Hidden Gem: Grieves and Budo

October 4th, 2010 by | Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap |

My friend recently went to an Atmosphere concert and these guys opened for him so he told me all about them.
Born in Chicago, Benjamin Laub, Grieves, has been exposed to of all types of music but started rapping at 19 in Seattle. After his debut album, Irreversible (Buy) in 2007, he started collaborating with Budo, his producer. Together they came out with 88 Keys and Counting (Download). They are working on a follow up to that project in New York, due out in the next couple months.
Their singing and rapping, as well as a variety of instruments provides a new hip hop feel.
