Ski Beatz – 24 Hour Karate School Pt. II (Review)

August 11th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

With all of the hype about Watch the Throne, producer Ski Beatz just released a sick album completely under the radar. 24 Hour Karate School Part II has the same format as its predecessor, where Ski cooks up his typical brand of jazzy, underground hip-hop, then invites some of the game’s fastest up-and-comers over to spit. It’s good shit.

If you remember from the last album, Ski had Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, and Stalley spit, all of whom had tremendous years so far. Ski has been in the game a long time and not only can he create great music, but he’s also serving as a tastemaker to feature artists that he likes, that a lot of people haven’t heard.

24 Hour Karate School part 1 had a few songs that were a little too out there for me, but Mr. Beatz’ latest work is full of solid tracks with none that I want to skip over. Each track features beats that you can’t hear anywhere else except from the man himself, and some of the hottest rappers killing it on each track. Highlights of mine are:

Ski Beatz – Illegal (Ft. Freddie Gibbs)

Ski Beatz – Moon Walkin’ (Ft. STS)

Ski Beatz is definitely a hidden gem in the hip-hop game and I highly recommend everyone go cop the album on itunes and follow the dude on Twitter to support.

Nesby Phips – Magic (Ft. Curren$y and Stalley)

Everyone in the game knows Curren$y, but the dudes in his crew are some of the most underrated rappers in the game. I mean, Spitta does his part by featuring them all on his music, but for some reason, they just don’t get the attention they deserve. Check out “Magic,” a new track from Curren$y’s boy Nesby Phips, featuring Spitta and Stalley. The track is super smooth, as it’s produced by Ski Beatz, and each rapper goes hard on the beat.

Stalley – Hercules X Babblin’

Another sick Ohio rapper, Stalley is on his way to releasing his newest mixtape, Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music),which Hercules is off of. With the great production of Ski Beatz, Stalley brings us intelligent lyrics, meaningful tracks, and smooth verses. Babblin’ was made for the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, so make sure to check it out.

Ski Beatz, producer to 24 Hour Karate School (debut album)

September 20th, 2010 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

Ski Beatz has been in the hip-hop industry since 1989 and has worked with artists such as Jay-Z in his early work, rap duo Camp Lo, Fat Joe, Foxy Brown, Lil’ Kim, Joell Ortiz and up-and-coming rapper Curren$y.

**Update: I realized Ski Beatz isn’t an artist but produced all the songs and got a bunch of incredible artists to perform the songs. Ski Beatz is pretty much like DJ Khaled, an awesome producer with incredible artists performing over his songs.**

In 2010, he decided to release his debut album as an artist, entitled 24 Hour Karate School, which drops tomorrow. I have heard three tracks from it and they are all really good songs with features from Jim Jones and Curren$y, Mos Def, and Jay Electronica among others.

Here are two of my favorites off the upcoming album; “Go” and “I Got Mines”.
