Thursday I witnessed two emerging musicians rise to the responsibility of putting on a great energetic show in Los Angeles as Cobi and then Boy & Bear played fun, engaging sets that were easy to sing and/or dance along to. Read my review below! (more…)

Hidden Gem: Cobi *emerging soulful pop act similar to Hozier!

October 31st, 2016 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Pop |

Shout out to Go Lightly Media who keeps pitching me really talented emerging artists and the latest I present to you today is Cobi. His first single, “Don’t You Cry For Me” has garnered over 15 million streams on Spotify since debuting in May and I love the track!

Cobi reminds me of three other emerging artists I really dig in Hozier (similar voice and production), Leon Bridges (similar soulful vibe) and Jamie N Commons (similar instrumentals and arranging). I think Cobi can achieve similar success as these artists and even rise to heights beyond what they’ve currently achieved and I love Leon Bridges and Jamie N Commons!

Los Angeles catch me enjoying the soulful vibes of Cobi and Australian indie folk-rock band Boy & Bear at Teragram Ballroom this Wednesday November 2nd. Highly recommend this show as I’m a new fan of what Cobi is putting out there and a HUGE FAN of the headliner, Boy & Bear, who remind me of a mix between The War On Drugs and Houndmouth.  Stream “Don’t You Cry For Me” and “Prophet Story” from Cobi below.

Justin Baron – Change Your Mind (Live) *MUST-WATCH video!

December 9th, 2011 by | Music Video |

Instruments, vocals, background vocals, everything, Justin Baron does it all in this video. It’s crazy when you hear how it all comes together and I have seen very few do this. “Change Your Mind” was looped live in one take!

The song is about trying to get a girl to change her mind and instead of being scared and alone, she should take a chance and fall in love with you. Asking her to “take your time, but change your mind.”

Justin Baron was the official opener of Dave Patten‘s Exposure Tour this Fall and is gearing up to release his next project in 2012.

Stream “Change Your Mind” (Live) below and click more to watch the official video to Justin Baron putting it all together to create such a soulful unique sound through looping. DOWNLOAD

Review: Royal Family Ball in Denver

May 23rd, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B |

I know on Before the Bigs we post a ton of hip-hop, but seriously, you don’t know hip-hop if you don’t know the jazz side of it. This past weekend had jazz/hip-hoppers Soulive descended on Denver, Colorado for two days, for what they called, the “Royal Family Ball.” They would perform two epic shows alongside their funk bretheren Lettuce and the hip-hop/breakbeat group Break Science. Each would be epic, with over 5 hours of music each night, and luckily, I was able to attend the Friday show, the first night of the party. Read the rest of the review after the jump:

it’s time to get down with Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears

February 15th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video |

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears are one of my favorite blues/soul bands out there because frankly, there are not too many that are still around today with how the music industry has evolved. They have a retro appeal much like Fitz & The Tantrums and a little bit like The Black Keys but specifically have sound a bit like James Brown and carry some of his swagger as well.

My brother saw them open up for Passion Pit last year and even though Black Joe Lewis hasn’t released new music since 2009, when they released an four song EP and then in March 2009 released their debut album, Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is!

Their album is a must buy for anybody that is down to have a good time with some soulful rock/blues. Here’s a few reasons why you should buy their album.
Get Yo Shit
Earlier today, Black Joe Lewis released a song on iTunes which is worth checking out as well.

Not throwback thursday: Fitz & The Tantrums

December 23rd, 2010 by | Alternative/Indie, Pop, R&B |

Although their music sounds like some back in the day R&B and Funk/Soul stuff, Fitz & The Tantrums are a rising soulful pop band from Los Angeles.

They released debut EP in 2009 (purchase), got signed by Dangerbird Records in 2010 and released their debut album (purchase) in August ’10. Here’s a couple of my recent favorites from Fitz & The Tantrums.

Don’t Gotta Work It Out

Cee-Lo – Please x It’s OK

November 5th, 2010 by | R&B |

Two new Cee-Lo songs off his upcoming album, The Lady Killer, dropping November 9. Relaxing songs to enjoy for a relaxing weekend.

It’s OK

Please ft. Selah Sue

I like how Cee-Lo brings this retro R&B/Soul then made contemporary and popular for today’s music lovers.

Ben l’Oncle Soul – Crazy

November 3rd, 2010 by | Alternative/Indie, R&B |

R&B/Soul artist Ben l’Oncle Soul has done a few covers of contemporary songs but gives a more relaxed vide to it with a little bit of soul (hence soul being in his artist name).

I put his “Seven Nation Army” cover in a post last week and this week, here’s Ben’s take on the Gnarls Barkley song, “Crazy”.

Late last week, Cee-Lo Green (of Gnarls Barkley) released “Fuck You” a neo-Motown style. Above is the lyrical video for Mr. Green’s big single, “Fuck You”, the first single off Cee-Lo’s upcoming album, The Ladykiller, coming out October 4th.

Below download “Fuck You” and a “Fuck You” remix by 50 Cent. Also I have included a bonus, “Be By Myself” a great Asher Roth track featuring the vocals of Cee-Lo.  Cee Lo Green – Fuck You by LilyBrown  Cee-lo Green – Fuck You [feat. 50 Cent] by BannanaStrings

Prospect of the Week: Outasight

August 20th, 2010 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Miscellaneous, Prospect of the Week |

Outasight – Catch Me If You Can from gregthedude on Vimeo.

Even though this rapper signed with a major record label in October 2009 with Warner Bros., Outasight is our Prospect of the Week because he hasn’t released a debut album yet, but is definately on the verge of becoming mainstream. Although Outasight is defined as a hip-hop artist, he has traces of rock, soul and some pop in the songs, which makes for a great genre-blending artist. The video above is the music video for the single, “Catch Me If You Can” from the Further EP and in 2010, Outasight collaborated with Asher Roth on the remix to the song.

On August 17, Outasight put out a mixtape, Never Say Never, which I really love and have included a link to below. This Yonkers, NY based musician will be releasing his debut album, From Here to Eternity in the Fall of 2010 (release date TBA).

Below I have included a few of my favorites by Outasight and download links to their latest mixtape (Never Say Never) and the Further EP, released in December ’09 and gained so much buzz that it isn’t free anymore 🙁  Outasight – Never Say Never – She’s Leaving Home by Hypetrak  Outasight – Never Say Never – Be Alright by Hypetrak  Outasight – Catch Me If You Can Remix (ft Asher Roth) by Tea N Muffin  Outasight – Never Say Never – Near The End (ft. Freddie Gibbs) by Hypetrak
