Shout out to Weapons of Audio for telling me about Hey Champ, a Chicago trio that has genre-blending sound with an electronic-base. Hey Champ actually has a connection to Lupe Fiasco and has gained praise from many other Chicago contemporary artists including The Cool Kids (featured below). However with the connections and work they have done with mainstream artists, their music hasn’t achieved the success they deserve.
Here’s a little bit about Hey Champ‘s sound which I got off their facebook:
The band incorporates influences from disco, house and indie rock, while combining the raw energy of Cheap Trick and the synth-heavy productions of Giorgio Moroder and Trevor Horn.
They do originals and remixes so for this post I will give you three favorites that are Hey Champ originals. Anything at All by Hey Champ
Finally, I’ve saved the best for last; day 3 of Lollapalooza 2011. Wow what a way to wrap up a great weekend with The Cool Kids, The Cars, Sam Adams, Nas & Damian Marley, and of courseDeadmau5. I didn’t have time to see Kid Cudior The Foo Fighers perform that day, but still I could not ask for more from yet another awesome day.
The only downside to Sunday’s events was that it was pouring rain on and off throughout the day. However, that did not stop me from enjoying great live music.
I started my day with The Cool Kidsat the ever popular Perry’s stage. They put on a great show and being from Chicago and all, the crowd was really into them. They have really started to grow on me in recent months and I like them even more now that I saw how awesome they are live. They played a variety of tracks especially from their newest upcoming album, WhenFish Ride Bicycles. One of their tracks from the album that I enjoyed hearing live is below, enjoy!
The Cool Kids “Swimsuits” (featuring Mayer Hawthorne) (Download):
After a great set by The Cool Kids, I made my way towards The Cars at the Music Unlimited stage for some great classic tunes. This rock band from the 1970’s performed in a very relaxing environment which was awesome. Chilling on the hills, sipping on cold beer and listening to songs like their big hit “Just What I Needed” was a moment I will never forget. Enjoy the track below.
Afterwards I headed over to the BMI stage to see Boston rapper Sam Adams perform for a little. It was very delayed due to heavy rain storms. Their were high school girls sliding around in the mud wait for Boston’s Boy to come on stage. After having to wait roughly 20 minutes for him, he eventually came on and actually put on a pretty solid show.
He may be a little overrated but something is there for him. He does put on a good show which I find to be very important for being successful as an artist. Check out one song below that I thought he did an exceptional job on. Enjoy!
Close to the BMI stage was the Bud Light stage where Nas & Damian Marley were tearing it up. They were on for over an hour and they even performed many of Nas’ old tracks which are my favorites. The chill vibes from the set culminating with the chicago skyline brought everyone there some memorable moments. Check out one of my favorites of theirs below. Enjoy!
Shortly after Nas & Damian Marley finished up their set. Deadmau5 came on to wrap up a great weekend of Lollapalooza. Unfortunately, the second he came on stage, it started pouring rain once again. However, that did not stop Deadmau5 from rocking out like he always does and with lots of style too.
This had been the second time I have seen him live and it certainly won’t be the last. He puts on an amazing show and I could not ask for a more perfect way to end an incredible weekend. It didn’t even matter that the rain was there. Enjoy my new favorite song by him that I cannot stop playing on replay!
The Cool Kids have dropped the second single called “Swimsuits” off their upcoming album, When Fish Ride Bicycles. This is different style we are used to hearing from. The first single they dropped off the project “Bundle Up” has more the typical The Cool Kids feel to it. However, this track does not disappoint and Mayer Hawthorne provides a great chorus to the track. Enjoy!
With When Fish Ride Bicycles confirmed to drop on July 12th. It appears that the official tracklist has dropped as well. Take a look at it below:
1. Rush Hour Traffic
3. Boomin’ (feat. Tennille)
4. Sour Apples (feat. Travis Barker)
5. Penny Hardaway (feat. Ghostface Killah)
6. Bundle Up
7. Gas Station (feat. Bun B)
8. Get Right
9. Swimsuits (feat. Mayer Hawthorne)
10. Roll Call (feat. Asher Roth, Chip Tha Ripper, Boldy James)
11. Summer Jam (feat. Maxine Ashley) (Prod. by Pharrell Williams)
Pictured above with President Obama, The Cool Kids are back with “Bundle Up” which will be on their next project When Fish Ride Bicycles. Their music is usually hit or miss for me but I love what I hear on this new track and I hope that is a sign of things to come. In the meantime, enjoy this awesome track!
Lupe brings a group known as the All City Chess Club made up of Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton, The Cool Kids, Blu, Diggy Simmons, B.o.B., and Dosage for a remix of his single from last year, I’m Beaming(Download original). Pretty sick. Lasers coming March 2011!
The music video above is of Travis Barker’s “Jump Down” featuring The Cool Kids off Barker’s upcoming album,Give The Drummer Some. I love this video because not only does Travis tear it up, but it is entirely filmed at the Venice Beach Boardwalk which was a great place to kick it with the homies growing up. What do you think of the music video?
“Oil Money” is from Freddie Gibbs’ Str8 Killa EP which is on iTunes. Oil Money features Chuck Inglish (The Cool Kids), Chip Tha Ripper, Bun B & Dan Auerbach (Black Keys). The video is fairly laid-back, don’t see a lot of bling on the rappers who are all just hanging by a storefront in a SUV.
Below download “Oil Money” and listen and download “Something New” feat. YP.
