The Freshmen – Crickets *smooth hip-pop

May 6th, 2012 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop |

Here’s some smooth hip-pop from California music duo The Freshmen. We’ve been following them since 2010 and their music always seems to mature with the quality of it’s sound. With “Crickets” it’s all about the smooth vibes from them.

Sorry to rant but when will record labels hear their feel-good hip-pop vibe sound and give these guys a record deal? Here’s more about the song “Crickets”, which has a real interesting concept behind it. (more…)

Video: The Freshmen – Here’s To You ft. Samm

March 25th, 2012 by | Music Video |

The Freshmen are back with a new video! Here’s the story behind “Here’s To You” ft. Samm:

At some point in our lives we’ve all dealt with the proverbial “Hater”. They come in all shapes and sizes; a school yard bully, a sh*tty boss, a so called friend, the media, etc…The list is long and not so distinguished. With their latest leak “Here’s To You”, The Freshmen thought it was only appropriate to release a song and a visual dedicated to our special friends, the haters. Over a dusty drum loop, some broken pianos and a beautifully scathing hook delivered by Samm, A. Wolf and Kristo wax poetic about the ups and down’s we all encounter in this thing called life. So put your glasses up dearest haters, this one’s for you…Thank you for everything!

The Freshmen – The Fonz *hip-hop/rock

June 14th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

“The Fonz” is the latest installment from California’s poster kids, The Freshmen. On this go around, the gang taps into the roots of cool…The Fonz. In a time when the latest fashion trends seem to define what’s “fly” and whats not, The Freshmen see it differently. Front men A. Wolf and Kristo deftly offer their re-definition of “fly”, over a charging break beat and a jukebox rock melody. Carlos Olivero checks in to offer up a bridge that confidently assures you that The Freshmen are “the coolest thing since ice”.

Like most Freshmen tunes, this record manages to blend genres and time periods to create something fresh. All in all this song is a nod to a time when being cool wasn’t something you wore it was something you lived.

BYNH Summer mix update: The Freshmen

March 28th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop |

Spring officially started last week so it’s time we start putting together Best You Never Heard 3: Spring Edition. On our way to releasing that, we want to update you with each of the artists from Best You Never Heard: Summer Mix on what they are doing since being featured back in early September.

The Freshmen are a hip-hop/pop trio from California. When I first heard their music back in July 2010, I knew these guys were something special with their unique sound.

They actually became a one of the many small reasons E-Wish and I decided to start, to find more artists like The Freshmen with music that can’t be defined by a specific music category, whose music has a different sound and who are emerging talent in the music industry.

Since featuring “Hello There” by The Freshmen on our BYNH: Summer edition, their following on facebook has increased by at least a couple hundred new fans, an increase in twitter fans and their following growing beyond their strong support from Cali. I only see this group improving further not in their music but also their popularity.

The Freshmen are currently in the studio making more new music. In February they released an official music video for their latest single, “Imagine” and once they get 30,000 views on the video, they will release a new song!

Here’s my top 3 favorites from The Freshmen:

Last month, The Freshmen released their newest single “Imagine“. Earlier today they made the visuals to these tracks available to the world. This is a great and laid back video adding to the type of much which it is “relaxing”. These guys are quite talented and I am sure you will be hearing more of them in the near future. Enjoy!

The Freshmen – “Imagine” (featuring Carlos Olivero)

It’s been a little while but The Freshmen are back with a brand new track. It’s called “Imagine” and it features Carlos Olivero. This Bay Area hip-hop group has taken about a 6 month hiatus since their last track dropped and it’s great to have a new song by them. I let them explain it:

“”Imagine” is a sonic leap in time. An ode to what music used to be. Producer THX delivers another retro banger while MC’s A. Wolf and Kristo pen lyrics that prove to be insightful without being pretentious. “Imagine” also features Pop/R&B singer, Carlos Olivero whose voice is a force to be reckoned with. A combination that lands somewhere between a spirited Beatles tinged opus and a flash forward to hip hop’s evolution. An ode to where music used to be…or, where it should be? You decide.”

Snoop Dogg – El Lay ft. Marty James *chill cruisin’ song

January 13th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, R&B |

Snoop it’s spelled LA, not El Lay, but I admire the creativity. Heard this song on the radio today while cruising around LA, made the song that much better.

Snoop Dogg takes a chill beat and uses it to reference different parts of LA and grabs Marty James for a catchy hook. You can’t hate on Snoop Doggy Dogg.

Bonus: If you’re feeling the hook more than Snoop, here’s another song featuring Marty James by one of our favorite up-and-coming West coast hip-hop groups, The Freshmen. I thought we did a post on “Contact” but I guess not.

Before The Bigs Summer ’10 Mix: Best You Never Heard

September 3rd, 2010 by | Alternative/Indie, Before Bigs Exclusive, Daily Mix, Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap, Mashup, Pop, R&B, Remix, Rock |

The mix is 25 songs released this summer (May-August), by artists who haven’t released a debut album yet. The only exception is “All Summer” by Kid Cudi, Best Coast and Vampire Weekend because that’s one of the best songs released this summer.

Without further ado, enjoy Before The Bigs Summer ’10 Mix: Best You Never Heard (download links below):

The Bay Area’s own, The Freshman, are a rising hip-pop group bringing style back to west coast music! Members Kristo, A-Wolf, and THX are ready to make a name for themselves and there is no doubt they are on the right track for success.
