BenniB graces us with a new audio treat. Production by The KickDrums using the classic Rolling Stones song, “Start Me Up” for the Seattle rapper’s latest hit of the same name.
All these artists have been featured on BtB before and all have immense talent that will take them places in the future.
G-Eazy put this track out a couple days ago which samples Janis Joplin. I like how he continues to sample classic music that has shaped the music that came after it. Eazy’s a throwback and “Mercedes Benz (The American Dream)” proves his talent and the production skills on this is fire. Mercedes Benz (The American Dream) ft. Janis Joplin by g-eazy (DOWNLOAD)
Gabriel Stark recently dropped Thursday In Australia, a mixtape which is heavy on freestyle over others beats and some simple sampling. However “Lets Enjoy The Party”, which samples “Hello” by Dragonette & Martin Solveig is real cool. He speeds up the original, throws some sick beats on it, and really shows his rap skills on this banger of an instrumental.
Gilbere Forte get’s The Kickdrums production on it and just kills it on the sample he pulls from them. I respect and enjoy both artists and this collaboration packs a punch of awesome music that can’t be ignored. This song is probably a small reason why Forte recently got invited to the 2011 BET Awards. Gilbere Forte’ feat. The Kickdrums – Hello (DOWNLOAD)
Lastly we go to Rhode Island rapper Ethan Jaymes with “Reebok Pumps”, which samples Foster The People. I know I know, too many people have sampled/remixed/mashed-up “Pumped Up Kicks”, but this has some added beats to it and Jaymes straight kills it on the beat. This comes off his Breakfast In Rhode Island mixtape, which we sponsored, so you know it’s dope!
Talk about an interesting band that has a really diverse background giving them a diverse sound. Recently, The Kickdrums released The Ghost Mixtape (download), which has more of a hip-hop base than I expected on some songs, which makes it really cool. Overall a mixtape that has something for most music fans. Here’s my 2 favorites:
The Kickdrums – To the Beat of the Drum
The Kickdrums are like utility men for a sports team, they play multiple roles and their efforts, while not too well-known, are pivotal in a team’s success. The Kickdrums is a team assembled of two versatile musicians in Alex Fittz and Matt Penttila, who have worked with artists like 50 Cent and Kid Cudi but have recently shifted focus on hip-hop production but with heavy drum breaks and fuzzy guitars.
Recently they released a mixtape for this April’s Coachella Festival. In their roles as utility men, they remixed 40 songs and put in a little of The Kickdrums flair, improving most of the songs through the varied talents they bring to these songs.
If you want a great 50+ minute mix I highly recommend to download and view the tracklist. Below are 3 more songs from The Kickdrums that I thoroughly enjoy as well.
Above is a mashup/cover by produced by PJ Simas and performed by him on the instrumentals and rapping and Jorden Corey with the vocals. In the song they specifically focus on Skylar Grey’s part from “Coming Home” by Diddy Dirty Money and her feature in “I Need A Doctor” by Dr. Dre and Eminem. Download “Coming Home x I Need A Doctor” (cover).
Below are three other really good songs that are covers.
First is The Kickdrum’s cover of Nirvana’s song “Love Buzz”, big fan of the instrumentals and the vocals go along really well. The Kickdrums – Love Buzz (Nirvana Cover)
Recently Mike Posner did a cover of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep”. Before you dismiss Posner for what turned out to be a flop of a debut album save for a few pop hits, Posner returns to his awesome production roots for a relaxed pop cover. Mike Posner – Rolling In The Deep (Adele Cover)
Lastly Yeasayer covers Seal’s “Crazy”. Seal is a great artist and while I don’t think the Yeasayer cover is better than the original, it provides a alternative/folk perspective of one of the best Seal songs. Yeasayer – Crazy (Seal Cover)
