Sampled Saturday *Jay Fresh, Jacob Es, Aziz, Alex Frecon, Theo Martins

November 19th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Sampled Saturday |

A couple new artists to BtB and a few that have been featured on the site multiple times and will get featured many more times with where it seems there music is heading.

First we got a newbie on the site, Jay Fresh, who collaborated with the Pretty Lights record label, specifically producer/DJ SuperVision, to create “Amazing”, which samples Pretty Lights. Its got a chill hip-hop vibe and shows the potential of skater turned rapper Jay Fresh, who has much more planned with Pretty Lights work. “Amazing” will be off Jay Fresh‘s upcoming, The Delta Project, which is Jay Fresh vs Pretty Lights. Watch the music video here.

Next comes Jacob Es with “In The City” off his upcoming project Piece of Mind, dropping real soon. If you are not familiar, this song samples the 1960s hit “Summer In The City” from Lovin’ Spoonful. Loving the sample, really digging his rap and overall looking forward to this upcoming project Jacob Es has been touting lately.

Next comes Brandies University student-athlete Aziz with “Wind Blows” which samples the indie/alternative chill song from Yukon Blonde. D-Why first sampled this song back in mid-September and Aziz took a crack at it, releasing the song on September 19. Personally, I think the Aziz one has slightly improved production and better rapping. However you be the judge and comment below on your favorite use of the sample.

Next comes Alex Frecon who released his debut EP in late August, which included the Passion Pit sampled “I’ll Stay”. I can’t ignore a Passion Pit sample because they are amazing and although Alex Frecon can’t be described as amazing, I’m digging the production and the rapping is solid.
I’ll Stay by AlexFrecon

Lastly one of my favorite artists in this post, Theo Martins, who recently moved to LA to better focus on his budding music career. This dude is very talented, not only with the amazing sampled production he has shown in the past but his rapping is dope too! In this, he samples Foster the People (not Pumped Up Kicks!). The production is so catchy utilizing FTP and his rapping gives the original another direction not entirely touched on yet.

Theo Martins – “Get It” (DJ Goldfish Bootleg)

June 23rd, 2011 by | Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix |

We’ve been supporting Theo Martins work for sometime now and we got another submission today worth posting about. I’ll his representation explain it all:

“Theo Martins is back from Asia, where he’s enjoying success by being featured on the Mizz Nina single “Get It.” The song has reached #1 on the Hitz FM charts in Malaysia. That said, the party jam has been given an electro tune-up for the clubs by DJ Goldfish. Pardon my hyperbole, but this remix is freakin insane. You’ll see.”

Quite the banger if you ask me. Check out this video of him killing it overseas in which his representation explains:

“Not without merit, Theo documented his trip to the other side of the world. Watch Thursdays With Theo Episode 4 below and see him perform for thousands of screaming fans who are literally going crazy to his jams. I think it’s safe to say he’s living the dream. How many US rappers are killing it overseas? Not many.”

Vonnegutt – $Free.99 (Mixtape) *must-download!

June 1st, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix, Rock |

Vonnegutt returns and with an awesome new mixtape. $Free.99 provides great diversity with many great features and covers of classic songs. Popular tracks such as “Day ‘n’ Nite”, “Find Your Love”, “Runaway”, “Dammit”, and more are covered by the Vonnegutt with awesome features such as Theo Martins, 2AM Club, Sonny Shotz, OnCue, Hoodie Allen and more create awesome verses on these tracks. This is truly an amazing mixtape which further exposes the great talents of Vonnegutt and beyond. If you don’t know who any of these people are now, you certainly will after hearing this mixtape. Below are my favorite covers on this mixtape:

“Day ‘n’ Nite” (featuring Theo Martins & D Woods):
This cover is of Kid Cudi’s first ever big hit. With Theo Martins and Kyle Lucas killing it as usual with the rapping and D Woods providing a great chorus. This is truly and enjoyable track to listen to. Check it out for yourself

“Runaway” (featuring 2 AM Club & Sonny Shotz)
This Kanye West cover features 2 AM Club & Sonny Shotz of The Dean’s List and is my favorite of all the great covers on this mixtape.

“Dammit” (featuring OnCue, Hoodie Allen, & Shanell)
Another awesome cover of “Dammit” by one of my favorite 90’s rock bands Blink 182. This track features great versus by OnCue and Hoodie Allen with Shanell dominating the chorus. Anyone who loves Blink 182 track will enjoy this cover as well.

Love the covers above? I thought so. There are many more awesome tracks and covers on this mixtape worth listening to. I highly recommend you download the whole mixtape as you will have it on repeat for a while!

Theo Martins – I Can’t Stop (Puffy Time) x Get It x GO

May 26th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Dance, Dubstep, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, Remix |

Big Theo Martins update with three new songs he released within the last month or so. First track is his latest that he released this week, “I Can’t Stop (Puffy Time)” which has production from dubstep producer Flux Pavilion. Loving the dubstep/electro instrumental with Theo keeping up on the rhymes
Theo Martins – I Can’t Stop (Puffy Time)
Next we got “Get It” which is more of a electronic pop hop track as Theo Martins collaborate with Malaysian superstar pop singer Mizz Nina with production from DJ Fuzz. I like the club/party feel of this song and it further shows the variety of quality music Theo Martins puts out.
Theo Martins, Mizz Nina, DJ Fuzz – Get It
Lastly comes a Theo Martins remix to one of Santigold‘s latest singles “Go”. I thought the original is solid but Theo Martins jumps on it and the song just sounds more upbeat. Further showing his diverse sound, “Go” is more of an alternative hip-hop jam with some interesting electronic influences.

Theo Martins is currently preparing for his tour to Asia starting next week.

Theo Martins – The Spotlight x 2 older faves x new music video

April 10th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

When Theo Martins released “The Spotlight” recently, I knew had to jump on listening to this. Once again Theo Martins thrives sampling a variety of non-hip-hop tracks and bringing this indie hip-hop/pop to the song he samples.

Lately I have noticed a more electro/hip-hop feel with his music which I like a lot since he is working towards what the music industry’s mainstream sound is evolving into; more upbeat dance club instrumentals.

In “The Spotlight” he goes in a more electro synth instrumentals with the Class Actress sample. Love the instrumentals, rapping over it is cooler than Theophilus London which he reminds me of in this song but this is a bit more alternative with more mainstream rapping.
Theo Martins – The Spotlight ft. Class Actress

Below listen and download two older favorites of mine from Theo Martins, one which is a remix to a remix that includes the likes of Passion Pit and Bruno Mars and the other more of an indie popish song with some hip-hop that samples Wakey!Wakey! Also new music below! (more…)

mixtapes you missed pt 2 *Olu, Primary Element, Rocky Business, Sneakas, Theo Martins

March 21st, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B, Rock |

Here’s some more mixtapes you might have missed this year from some good under the radar hip-hop artists. Each of them have some unique sounds to them and are fairly underrated and on their grind.
First we got Midwest rapper Olu who sent us Boys And Girls back in February. Olu has good production skills and good rap skills which make him a great commodity in the hip-hop game. Below are a couple of my favorites one of my new favorite projects from Olu.
Olu – 2 am (Prod. By Olu_Ryan Macgowan)
Olu – Under The Sheets (Prod. By Xaphoon)

Another artist who reached out to us recently is DMV hip-hop group Primary Element. I loved their song “Hello World” then hadn’t heard much since. However they sent us Ambition and below are two of my faves from that mixtape.
Primary Element – Something Primary
Primary Element – Waddup Playa

One of my favorite New York hip-hop groups is Rocky Business who blend genres and have a retro-futuristic sound. They released White People Are Drug Dealers Too in anticipation for their upcoming album Rebel’s Roar, dropping later this week. Here’s two of my favorites off their latest mixtape.
Rocky Business – Kim Kardashian
Rocky Business – Janis Joplin ft. Fresh Daily

Sneakas is a New York city MC who released his latest mixtape, Hebonics 101, last week. That’s about all I know about him and when I listened to the mixtape I found several songs I didn’t care for but a couple I really liked. Here’s my two favorites from Sneakas who has an old school soul to his music.
Sneakas – Good Day (feat. C. Rob)
Sneakas – Plastic Happy (Feat. G.T.O.)

Again I save the best for last with Theo Martins latest mixtape, Sincerely Yours, The Dance Floor. After hearing many of his free releases before he released this mixtape, I was sold that Theo Martins had improved off his hit remix to Kanye West’s “Power“. My high expectations paid off as this mixtape has several songs I really love and is a must download for some electronic pop hop fun.
Theo Martins – Turn It Up ft. Plan B
Theo Martins – Slow It Down (produced by Paul Cantor)
Theo Martins – Cult Logic ft. Miike Snow
Theo Martins – White Friends ft. Gordon Voidwell

Theo Martins – “Final Fantasy” featuring Starf*cker (Official Music Video)

March 4th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

[youtube lg47L-xwnS0]

Last week we dropped “Final Fantasy” by Theo Martins featuring Star*cker. Well today he sent us the visuals for the track. The concept of the video is simple let legit. He says:

“I wanted this video to visually represent what the song ‘Final Fantasy’ is about, which is the idea of fulfilling your dreams. So we cooked up some stop motion sequences from footage and images taken on this wild journey of mine and set them against a backdrop of dreams happening where they typically happen— during sleep. It was a super fun video to shoot and I hope people enjoy it. I think it represents a lot of the weird things that go on in this crazy brain of mine.”

He has really been blowing up recently and I hope to hear more tracks by him dropping soon. Enjoy!

Theo Martins teams up with Starf*cker to create one super awesome track. It’s called “Final Fantasy” and it’s off his upcoming mixtape, Sincerely Yours, The Dance Floor. I love the mixing of genres in this track. It has a little bit of hip-hop, pop, and alternative rock put together into one legit sound. Keep up the good work Theo!

Theo Martins – Just Cant Get Enough *Depeche Mode sample

February 11th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix |

Love the 80’s hit song “Just Can’t Get Enough” by Depeche Mode? Well then you’ll love the remix that Theo Martins did of it. It keeps much of the original song but adds a much more party feel to it and is rapping is pretty legit. This is the first single off his upcoming mixtape, Sincerely Yours, The Dance Floor. I’ll let Theo explain his inspiration for the song a little bit:

“The song’s about nights that you just hope will never end. When you’re out there in the world, having a good time, feeling great about life, and you just want more and more. You just can’t get enough, basically.”

Check it out and lets us know what you think. Enjoy!
