Hidden Gem: The Yugos *infectious quirky lo-fi pop/rock

unnamed2 Hidden Gem: The Yugos *infectious quirky lo fi pop/rockCincinnati based band The Yugos will release their album Weighing the Heart on March 10th via Old Flame Records. When I heard their song “Ingenue” back in early February, I was hooked! I can’t wait for their album as I think this band has influences from bands like The Talking Heads, The Psychadelic Furs and The Cure. You might not love it on your first listen but once you listen again, you won’t want to stop as it’s got this dark infectious lo-fi rock/pop vibe that sounds fresh!

Stream “Ingenue” below.

If you like that listen to “Steve French” and “Take Some Time” below. (more…)

Introducing Los Colognes *tropical smooth fun

February 8th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Ambient, Electropop, Hidden Gem, Pop |

unnamed1 Introducing Los Colognes *tropical smooth funNashville-based Los Colognes have just announced their third album The Wave, out May 12th via Big Deal Media / Thirty Tigers. Last month they released the first track “Flying Apart,” which has such a tropical smooth sound I’m hooked on! The band has a run of shows in the US, including opening slots for St. Paul and the Broken Bones and an appearance at Sasquatch Festival.

Guitarist/singer Jay Rutherford opines in “Flying Apart” – ‘Nobody believed / We’re all just hoping / Floating down streams.” It’s a song that invokes “the wave” metaphor of the album’s title, while churning through its own sonic sea of shimmering keyboards and guitars anchored by drummer Aaron Mortenson. The music evokes any of the best moments of late seventies or mid eighties FM radio while never being weighed down by the specter of influence. Los Colognes are a young band who have managed to forge their own sound while channeling the best sonic worlds of the decades past.

Stream “Flying Apart” below and find out more info on the upcoming album and Los Colognes upcoming tour dates!

Unlike the live approach used to record the group’s previous records, The Wave was built from the ground up with attention to each part. There is a certain economy of space in the songs that feel’s deliberate, while never ceasing to be warm and inclusive. Guitar and keyboard lines drift off each other in between lyrical exchanges while Mortenson propels the beat, sometimes meditative, sometimes driving.
The journey to finish recording The Wave was its own quest for Rutherford and Mortenson, a more deliberate process of creation and craft that shows a band becoming fully aware of its voice and its vision. Los Colognes have given us a singular collection of quietly anthemic tunes held together by philosophical reflection and damn fine rock and roll chops. The Wave is coming.
The Wave is out May 12th, preorder the album HERE.

Listen: Strange Talk – Young Hearts *must listen electro pop

February 7th, 2014 by | Alternative/Indie, Electropop, Music Video, synthpop |

artworks 000067907322 fkeq6r t500x500 Listen: Strange Talk Young Hearts *must listen electro popAustralia indie electro pop band Strange Talk is back with a new song, titled “Young Hearts”, off their upcoming debut album, Cast Away (Pre Order), which I can’t wait to come out on April 29th. “Young Hearts” has their signature indie electro pop vibes that remind me of Cut Copy, Empire Of The Sun and Passion Pit, acts that Strange Talk will reach in popularity once their debut drops and their worldwide touring begins. This band is built for stardom and ever since I saw them at The Satellite back in November, I’ve been dying to hear more new releases from them.

Stream “Young Hearts” below and you will understand why I dig these Aussie rockers so much.

By the way, if you haven’t seen their latest music video for “Eskimo Boy”, you MUST WATCH IT! This is one of their best songs and the reason I fell in love with their music back in 2011!

Hidden Gem: Jake Troth *emerging alternative pop star

860798342aff11e3bc2722000a1faee5 8 600x600 Hidden Gem: Jake Troth *emerging alternative pop starLast Monday, the Recording Academy staff had the pleasure of getting a showcase performance from singer/songwriter/producer Jake Troth. He was an absolute joy to see live as most of us hadn’t heard of him and didn’t know what to expect. He performed 4 songs and although my co-workers didn’t enjoy all of them and said the last two were way better than the first two, I felt all four songs were pretty good. However the songs that stuck with me were “On My Way” and “Material Things”.

Keep an eye out on the alternative pop performer as he’s already worked and performed with rapper Big Boi on the track “Apple Of My Eye“, has his upcoming album Double Black Diamond coming out soon and will be signed to a major record deal sooner than later.

Watch the music videos for “On My Way” and “Material Things” below. (more…)

The Pass – Without Warning *indie electronic rock

July 28th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Electronic Rock |

52837 448343367818 7692696 o 600x400 The Pass Without Warning *indie electronic rockThe Pass recently released the first single off their upcoming album Melt.

Here’s what The Pass had to say to us about the song and the upcoming album:

We’re very excited to share our first single, “Without Warning”, off our second LP, Melt.  For close to two years now we’ve been working on Melt and had the wonderful mixing help of Alex Aldi who recently finished up work with the new Passion Pit and Holy Ghost!.  We’re staying a little mum on the release date/label for now, but wanted to give a taste off our new record which as all bands who send their work to bloggers…we hope you enjoy.

Melt is the culmination of taking a lot of our goals when we started our band and combining it with all the things we learned being together for two and a half years.  Everything you learn on the road……what works and what doesnt……what you like and what you dont, what makes people want to smile or scratch their heads.  Ultimately, our goal was still to make a fun album but also reach new levels of emotion…..nostalgia and intrigue, longing and desire, complacency or heartbrokenness. Some songs have a bit darker or experimental sound than our previous album while others would be very at home at a disco.

Stream and DOWNLOAD “Without Warning” below. It’s a MUST-LISTEN indie electronic rock song!

I like the chill guitar riff on this, the lyrics are alright, the video is kind of boring but the song is real chill-hop love song. It’s the second single to the album following Aer‘s June 25 release of “Floats My Boat.”
