Vampire Weekend new album in 2017?

June 12th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie |

I’ve been hearing rumors that Vampire Weekend will be releasing a new record in 2017 as they’ve inked a deal with Columbia Records recently. Lead singer Ezra Koenig gave an update to Pitchfork in regards to this, saying the album is tentatively titled Mitsubishi Macchiato. This would be the band’s fourth album and first without Rostam Batmanglij, who has done fantastic work with Hamilton + Rostam, I just love the song, “A 1000 Times”.

Vampire Weekend are anticipated to follow up on the success of their first three albums, with the release of Mitsubishi Macchiato later this year. I can’t wait to hear anything new from VW, I just love this band and the eclectic sounds each of their previous releases have provided.

In the meantime, watch Vampire Weekend perform “Unbelievers” on SNL back in 2013. (more…)

Toronto-based indie rockers, Fast Romantics are thrilled to announce that their highly-anticipated sophomore LP American Love will be released on April 28 via Light Organ Records. New single “Why We Fight” has this uplifting rock/pop vibe similar to Bruce Springsteen and Arcade Fire, it’s easy to enjoy the power pop hooks and I can’t wait to hear the full album from these guys!

Introducing Shane Henry *rock blues infusion

March 15th, 2017 by | Hidden Gem, Rock |

Today I want to introduce you to acclaimed blues rock musician Shane Henry. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Henry has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments opening for such artists as BB King, Etta James, Buddy Guy, Edwin McCain and the Destroyers. His new album is produced in part by in part by David Ryan Harris (John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Santana) and Justin Glasco (The Lone Bellow). Henry’s music has been heard on NBC, CBS, Discovery Channel, Hallmark Channel, and the E! Television network.

Here’s his new single, “Save Me”, off his upcoming album, Light in the Dark (due for release April 28). According to the person who reached out with the song, the upcoming album “boasts songs that effectively reflect an upward gaze while offering hope and comfort in a world where challenges abound and confusion often reigns. A mix of the occasionally dark underbelly, some instantly accessible grooves, a host of ready refrains and fiery fretwork, it carries a persistently uplifting theme throughout.”

Stream “Save Me” below and be on the lookout for Shane Henry’s upcoming album. (more…)

Stream: Tuxedo – “2nd Time Around” *disco/funk

March 8th, 2017 by | Disco, Electropop, Pop, R&B, synthpop |

I love the future disco/funk vibes of Tuxedo and I’m so excited to share the first release from their upcoming album Tuxedo II (pre-order) out March 24 through Stones Throw Records. “2nd Time Around” continues the impressive upbeat debut release Tuxedo dropped in 2015 and I can’t wait for this 2nd album as it will be wholly original yet still draw influence from the future funk wobble of Zapp, Gap, Jam/Lewis and Junie Morrison, while nodding lyrically to Mtume, Jodeci and Cameo.

Tuxedo is Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One. The crystallization of their 2nd album’s concept comes courtesy of its message of universal love; thanks to the signature combination of soul and pop sensibility that have come to define Mayer’s hook. I can’t wait to hear the full length, definitely buying this album when it drops!

Stream “2nd Time Around” below, watch them perform it live on Jimmy Kimmel Live and peep the upcoming tour dates, you do not want to miss this duo live! (more…)

Hidden Gem: The Yugos *infectious quirky lo-fi pop/rock

February 23rd, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Pop, Rock |

Cincinnati based band The Yugos will release their album Weighing the Heart on March 10th via Old Flame Records. When I heard their song “Ingenue” back in early February, I was hooked! I can’t wait for their album as I think this band has influences from bands like The Talking Heads, The Psychadelic Furs and The Cure. You might not love it on your first listen but once you listen again, you won’t want to stop as it’s got this dark infectious lo-fi rock/pop vibe that sounds fresh!

Stream “Ingenue” below.

If you like that listen to “Steve French” and “Take Some Time” below. (more…)

Introducing Los Colognes *tropical smooth fun

February 8th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Ambient, Electropop, Hidden Gem, Pop |

Nashville-based Los Colognes have just announced their third album The Wave, out May 12th via Big Deal Media / Thirty Tigers. Last month they released the first track “Flying Apart,” which has such a tropical smooth sound I’m hooked on! The band has a run of shows in the US, including opening slots for St. Paul and the Broken Bones and an appearance at Sasquatch Festival.

Guitarist/singer Jay Rutherford opines in “Flying Apart” – ‘Nobody believed / We’re all just hoping / Floating down streams.” It’s a song that invokes “the wave” metaphor of the album’s title, while churning through its own sonic sea of shimmering keyboards and guitars anchored by drummer Aaron Mortenson. The music evokes any of the best moments of late seventies or mid eighties FM radio while never being weighed down by the specter of influence. Los Colognes are a young band who have managed to forge their own sound while channeling the best sonic worlds of the decades past.

Stream “Flying Apart” below and find out more info on the upcoming album and Los Colognes upcoming tour dates!

Unlike the live approach used to record the group’s previous records, The Wave was built from the ground up with attention to each part. There is a certain economy of space in the songs that feel’s deliberate, while never ceasing to be warm and inclusive. Guitar and keyboard lines drift off each other in between lyrical exchanges while Mortenson propels the beat, sometimes meditative, sometimes driving.
The journey to finish recording The Wave was its own quest for Rutherford and Mortenson, a more deliberate process of creation and craft that shows a band becoming fully aware of its voice and its vision. Los Colognes have given us a singular collection of quietly anthemic tunes held together by philosophical reflection and damn fine rock and roll chops. The Wave is coming.
The Wave is out May 12th, preorder the album HERE.

Listen: Strange Talk – Young Hearts *must listen electro pop

February 7th, 2014 by | Alternative/Indie, Electropop, Music Video, synthpop |

Australia indie electro pop band Strange Talk is back with a new song, titled “Young Hearts”, off their upcoming debut album, Cast Away (Pre Order), which I can’t wait to come out on April 29th. “Young Hearts” has their signature indie electro pop vibes that remind me of Cut Copy, Empire Of The Sun and Passion Pit, acts that Strange Talk will reach in popularity once their debut drops and their worldwide touring begins. This band is built for stardom and ever since I saw them at The Satellite back in November, I’ve been dying to hear more new releases from them.

Stream “Young Hearts” below and you will understand why I dig these Aussie rockers so much.

By the way, if you haven’t seen their latest music video for “Eskimo Boy”, you MUST WATCH IT! This is one of their best songs and the reason I fell in love with their music back in 2011!

Hidden Gem: Jake Troth *emerging alternative pop star

October 7th, 2013 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Pop |

Last Monday, the Recording Academy staff had the pleasure of getting a showcase performance from singer/songwriter/producer Jake Troth. He was an absolute joy to see live as most of us hadn’t heard of him and didn’t know what to expect. He performed 4 songs and although my co-workers didn’t enjoy all of them and said the last two were way better than the first two, I felt all four songs were pretty good. However the songs that stuck with me were “On My Way” and “Material Things”.

Keep an eye out on the alternative pop performer as he’s already worked and performed with rapper Big Boi on the track “Apple Of My Eye“, has his upcoming album Double Black Diamond coming out soon and will be signed to a major record deal sooner than later.

Watch the music videos for “On My Way” and “Material Things” below. (more…)
