Twin River – Rough Gold EP

August 12th, 2012 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie |

This Vancouver based indie-folk band is one you will not want to miss. Courtney Ewan and Andy Bishop are a couple of kids who make up Twin River laying down some rad harmonies and living up to the brand of folk. Instantly, you will notice their gift for the seemingly contradicting–but at the same time harmonious–juxtaposition of the ominous music paired with pretty, innocent, and even an up-beat melody. Not only are they talented musicians, but storytellers as well. Take a listen for yourself to their new streamable EP.

Mashup Monday: Steely Chan *funky hip-hop groove

July 16th, 2012 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Mashup, Mashup Monday |

We haven’t done Mashup Monday in awhile, mostly because I’m starting to hate how catchy and similar-sounding mashups have become. I’m losing respect for the genre, because I know how easy it is to make a mashup and I don’t like how popular some mashup artists have become for mixing one song with another song or two.

However Steely Chan seems to have created mashups that have funky grooves more along the lines of remixes, by mixing in some funky instrumentals into mostly classic hip-hop songs.

Stream and download my most recent favorite from Vancouver’s Steely Chan.

Here’s another five mashup/remixes from Steely Chan. (more…)

Not so hidden gem: Project 46 *Progressive House

June 26th, 2012 by | Disco, House |

Project 46 hit us up with “Atarax” about a few weeks ago and I liked it but didn’t do anything with the song. Usually when it’s a free download, it’s more memorable as I can listen to it again and again but Project 46‘s popularity creates such a demand for his progressive house style that his tunes are not always free (except one).

Below are his three latest tracks, including the Nu-Disco single, “Atarax” and a few progressive house songs that are must-listen bangers. Enjoy.

Friends and Strangers – Hands to the Beat x Bliss On You *BANGER mashups

November 19th, 2011 by | Electronic Dance Music, Mashup |

Got two new banger mashups from Canada’s hottest DJ duo, Friends and Strangers. Plus they got some upcoming shows I wanted to let you all know about.

The first song, “Hands to the Beat”, mashes The Ting Tings new song with Fadi and Foster the People (not Pumped Up Kicks!). The Fadi instrumental really puts the bang in banger while the lyrics from The Ting Tings is dope and the lyrics from FTP dropping later in the song is the cherry on top of it all.

Next we got “Bliss On You” featuring B.o.B., Bruno Mars and Erik Arboras. Even if you don’t like these mashups, you gotta admit you at least gained a new EDM artist that you have become a fan of as Friends and Strangers seems to find the best up-and-coming DJs to sample instrumentals from. This is my favorite of the two as the familiarity of B.o.B. and Bruno Mars lyrics plus the banging electro-house instrumentals complete the package of a BANGER mashup that’s a MUST-DOWNLOAD.

For people in Canada and NYC, check out the upcoming Friends and Strangers show dates after the jump, including shows with Alesso and Colslella. (more…)

Hidden Gem: Smokey Robotic *electronic pop hop

February 27th, 2011 by | Electropop, Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap |

Watch the music video above for “Forever My Love” (DOWNLOAD) and I think you will agree Smokey Robotic is a pretty cool music group. Their music mixes genre’s with mostly electronic synthed up instrumentals over a mix of pop, hip-hop and R&B. Overall they are a funky band and they have become one of my favorites where I can’t wait til they release new music.

Below are two of my favorites from the New York/Vancouver genre-blending music group. I say genre-blending because it would be an injustice to stick them into a genre when their music is so diverse.
Smokey Robotic – Voices (newest song)
Smokey Robotic – Outside the Lines (Uptown)
