Preview: Brokechella 2014 *best LA value festival of 2014

April 4th, 2014 by | Concert/Festival Review, Guest Mix |

A festival I had an unforgettable experience at because of the art, the underrated music, the hospitality of event staffers and overall fun in such a local scene was Brokechella 2012. Last year I couldn’t attend because of Coachella and this year personally won’t be able to attend but that doesn’t mean I won’t have awesome friends covering the festival for me while I enjoy Coachella weekend 2.

For those in Southern California that can’t afford Coachella and are into more intimate festival scenes, then Brokechella is for you! With over 50 musicians performing and even comedians this year, it’s sure to be a festival worth going to. For $10, that’s less than 50 cents an artist and you know the people of cARTel know how to throw a super fly dope fun event for all. Now it’s in 4th year, Brokechella is sure to be one of the most talked about and underrated events of the season in Los Angeles and I highly recommend any music and/or comedy fan to check it out as you will have as great a time I did two years ago attending this Downtown LA event.

For more info on Brokechella, visit Brokechella.com and purchase tickets here. Because I’m pretty pumped the event has continued for the 4th year in a row, I’ve created a playlist of 15 artists from Brokechella to look forward to including BtB favorites Azad RightWarm BrewVerbs and many more! Tonight catch El-P, Warm Brew and Thurz at the Troubadour

December 19th, 2013 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

Tonight it’s going down at The Troubadour with an underrated hip-hop show put together by Red Bull Sound Select. I’ve been to a few of their events before and it’s always a good time but tonight should be a solid hip-hop show with some interesting local acts.

LA-based hip-hop trio Warm Brew, talented rapper/producer Azizi Gibson, and insightful rapper Thurz, who has broken away from U-N-I to create compelling, poignant solo concept albums, will kick off the night. Renowned Brooklyn rapper and Definitive Jux founder El-P will headline.

The show is all ages and tickets are just $3 for those who RSVP at http://win.gs/1jqfzYC, with all proceeds going back to support the opening local bands.

Here’s some more info below on the artists performing, including a song and/or video I enjoy from them. (more…)

Warm Brew Album Release Party at The Airliner

May 10th, 2012 by | Concert/Festival Review, Hip-Hop/Rap |

Last Friday, Los Angeles based hip-hop group Warm Brew celebrated the release of their album Kottabos with a party at the Airliner. It was called the “Puro Pinche Party”, hosted by Brownies & Lemonade and was an all around good time crackin’ party. The crowd was into the entire thing; jumping up and down and dancing with lots of excitement.

Take a look at the recap video from the “Puro Pinche Party” below, listen to my favorite track called “WB” off the new album and make sure to download the entire Kottabos album for your enjoyment! (more…)

Sampled Saturday *Justin W, Matt Clarke, Nicky Rage, Upper West, Warm Brew

July 2nd, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Sampled Saturday |

Another edition of Sampled Saturday and this week we got samples ranging from Britney Spears, Tom Petty, Avicii, Peter Pan and Billy Preaston.

First Justin W mixes up Britney Spears latest hit, rapping over a dubstep beat with some vocals riffs from Spears. Overall this is one of my favorites from Justin W and his production and rap skills seem to improve with each new song.
Justin W – It Never Ends (freestyle)
Next we go to Boston rapper Matt Clarke with “Free Fallin”. This is produced by Plan Z, rapping is alright but I mostly enjoy this song because of the chill Tom Petty sample. “Free Fallin” is off Clarke’s latest mixtape, Blank Check (DOWNLOAD).

Avicii sample, I couldn’t refuse posting this. This is the only song from Nicky Rage that I like and that’s solely because of the Avicii beat. It’s banging and the rap added to it doesn’t take away much from the beat.
Nicky Rage – Summertime Feelin’
Next comes probably the best sample using a song from Peter Pan! Love Upper West‘s creativity with the sample. “I Won’t Grow Up” from Upper West reminds me of Fortune Family and I look forward to more from the group.

Lastly comes a Billy Preaston sample. “Nothin From Nothin” comes from LA hip-hop group Warm Brew who has a chill flow. This is probably my favorite from the group and off their last project, Warm Brew EP (DOWNLOAD).
