Ridgewood Social Club – RSC (Mashup Album)

February 13th, 2012 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Mashup, Mashup Monday |

For the past couple of months, I have been hanging out and spinnin venues with Ben & Zach from the Ridgewood Social Club. Today, I am proud to bring to your their newest album, RSC. For more about the album, here’s what they had to say.

“We’re really excited to release “RSC”, our second full-length mashup album. “RSC” consists of 10 tracks and features 48 different samples, and in many ways it reflects our growth as a mashup duo. Given the state of mashups these days when everyone and their mom can throw a pop acapella over a house track at 128 bpm, we thought long and hard about how to approach our sophomore album.

Using a handful of DC venues as our test lab, we worked tirelessly over the last two months to develop a sound that provides listeners with a unique mashup experience. We were overwhelmed by the positive responses to our first album release, so as we aspire to play bigger venues, we’ve incorporated much bigger sounds into our tracks.

To celebrate the album’s release, we’ll be participating in a party on Monday, February 13 at 8:30 PM EST, and we hope you can join us on Friday February 24th at Liv in Washington DC, where we’ll be hosting a mashup party with some friends that include Bruneaux, DJ Strongarm, DJ Burnout, ten.sense, SEA apparel, and C4 Belts. Details here.

We also want to send out a huge thanks to Ben’s little brother Zeke for the cover art, you can see more of his artwork here:

For the free download, we’re asking folks to head to our Facebook page for it.”

Wale freestyles over 90′s one-hit wonder “Jump”

March 24th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

An artist I was fortune enough to see live while in college, Wale, is under-rated and possibly one of the best rappers out of DC. He freestyles over the 90’s one-hit wonder by Kriss Kross called “Jump”. Seeing Wale live, you get the feeling that he’s only going to get bigger.

Above is the full version of the music video for Wale’s “The Break Up Song”. It is narrated by Morgan Freeman and the plot of the music video is based of the film, 500 Days of Summer. Wale has really made some great music lately and it helps to have great visuals with it which he does. Enjoy!

Hidden Gem: The Dance Party

December 14th, 2010 by | Hidden Gem, Pop, Rock |

The band’s name is pretty much how their music sounds. Above is the music video for “Sasha Don’t Sleep”, one of the big reasons this band is one to watch out for.

They create a dance party with their party rock/power pop music. The Dance Party hails from DC and has put out a couple albums in 2007 (Friction! Friction! Friction!) and 2010 (Touch, purchase).

Below are a couple of their best tracks.

Hidden Gem: Kokayi

December 13th, 2010 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B, Rock |

Shouts to P&P for exposing me to an amazing genre-blending artist in Kokayi. Kokayi is really an interesting talent and here’s some words on why:

Synaptic overload of punk/hip-hop/funk/rock/psycho-discobilly, whichever box you want to put us in, we explode out of. We paint outside the lines and write beyond the margins. We like long walks in the sand, and goat cheese. turn ons: big speakers.

Above is from Kokayi’s facebook page. Below are three of my favorites off Kokayi’s latest release, Robots & Dinosaurs, purchase (trust me, it’s DOPE!).

By the way, Kokayi is a grammy award-winning singer/songwriter/emcee/producer; he’s got major talent!

Wale is the man! Above is the music video for “The Work” which is off his most recent mixtape, More About Nothing, which was released last month. I love Wale’s new songs and if you have not already, I recommend listening to his newest work as soon as you can. You will not be disappointed!

Wale – “Hold Yuh” freestyle

August 26th, 2010 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |
Wale released a freestyle over Gyptian’s latest single, “Hold Yuh”.
Below I posted “Hold Yuh” by Wale and a remix of the original with Nicki Minag. Also you can find one of my favorite Wale songs, “The Get Away”, which he made in September ’09 but decided to release on his latest mixtape, More About Nothing, which came out in earlier this month.  Wale – Hold Yuh by Fresh Connection® Media

New Wale mixtape! *More About Nothing*

August 3rd, 2010 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B |

So today Wale has released his sixth mixtape, More About Nothing, following the same theme as his Mixtape About Nothing, released back in 2008. I love how Wale mixes in sound bites from Seinfeld and how most of the songs are mostly just him, featuring only a few big artists such as Bun B, Waka Flocka and Wiz Khalifa.

Below is the link to download it and the tracklist. Enjoy!

Brenton Duvall: not just another mashup artist

July 31st, 2010 by | Mashup, Miscellaneous, Remix |

Some people like mashups, others find them annoying. Most of the time they are pretty simple with the DJ mixing two or three songs and it not sounding much different except for a change in lyrics. Enter Brenton Duvall, a DC-based mashup artist who makes the track better through making it a song with a few tracks mixed in as well as adding some beats and remixes.

Below are two of my favorites by him. If you enjoy these songs, check out his soundcloud page with around 13 tracks by him. World Tour (Weezy, Wale, Dre) by BrentonRules Brenton Duvall – Ambien (Sleepy Trip) (Lil Wayne x Passion Pit) by BeforeTheBigsZach

Wale moving past Chillin’

July 13th, 2010 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |
After I first watched this video, my excitement for new Wale music grew as he finally has released something after 2 months of working in the studio. Which is funny because not only did he release the above video announcing when his new mixtape would come out (More About Nothing due out August 3rd if you didn’t watch the video), he relased a new track titled “Workin'”, a great rap song with some guitar riffs that complement Wale’s aggressive flow very well. The mixtape’s title, More About Nothing, is Wale’s follow-up to his 2008 mixtape, The Mixtape About Nothing.

The Mixtape About Nothing was a great mixtape so I expect some hot tracks from the Washington DC rapper’s next mixtape and hope for big things when he releases his 2nd studio album, however, no word on when that will be released.
Below is “Workin'” which Wale recently released and “World Tour”, one of my favorites that was on Wale’s debut album, Attention Deficit. Check out that album because it is truly underrated and would’ve sold more units if Wale’s record label had more confidence in him. Wale – Workin’ by tds Wale – World Tour (Feat.
