About a week ago, Zoo Legacy released City Light Glow, a 5-track EP that is a MUST-DOWNLOAD if you dig genre-blending music. The Toronto indie rock/alternative hip-hop group that reminds me of The xx mixed with Kid Cudi has been on our radar for a long time and this release only furthers proof that Zoo Legacy will become a mainstream act, just as we predicted with fellow Canadian act DVBBS.
Our favorite alternative hip-hop group from Canada, Zoo Legacy, has finally released a new single and were proud to premier it on BeforeBigs.com. We are huge fans of this band who has the alternative instrumental style of The XX with the rap swagger of Kid Cudi. They just released “L.K.U.T.” off the upcoming EP, City Light Glow, coming out in early July.
Watch the video to “L.K.U.T.” below and read a brief Q&A I did with lead vocalist/rapper Nick Pouponneau of Zoo Legacy.(more…)
We are proud to present our 5th edition of Best You’ve Never Heard, which features 18 songs from up-and-coming artists in a variety of genres that we love. We set stricter guidelines this time in choosing emerging musical talents, only selecting artists who, as of December 28 2011, have less than 5,000 facebook fans. We also made sure to select artists that very little to none of our friends liked and knew about, to further strengthen the idea that these 18 tracks are the Best You’ve Never Heard.

Multi-instrumentalist Sam Goss from Canadian Alternative/Hip-Hop band Zoo Legacy decided to grace us with a 9 track mix of alternative rock music. Here’s what he had to say about it:
So the playlist starts off with the fairly chill Cloudlight, a more ambient/atmospheric song which slowly gets the beat going. Radiohead keeps the beat building with The Butcher. The playlist moves from sparse songs to fuller songs and peaks with Zoo Legacy, RHCP, and Hard-Fi, which is a driven by dirty distorted guitar in the chorus. Things taper off with The National, a great song by our friends Sound of Lions, and then finally a nice instrumental by Welder to wrap things up.
Here’s the tracklist for Zoo Legacy’s playlist (DOWNLOAD):
1. Cloudlight – Eskmo
2. The Butcher – Radiohead
3. The Day is Coming – My Morning Jacket
4. All Falls Down - Zoo Legacy
5. Did I Let You Know – Red Hot Chili Peppers
6. Excitement – Hard-Fi
7. Afraid of Everyone – The National
8. 11:44 – Sound of Lions
9. Run – Welder
If you prefer a continuous mix, here’s the 27-minute mix made by DJ Burnout of the songs above.
This is slowly becoming a series for us, so if you got a sick playlist featuring up-and-coming musicians, send it to us at BeforeTheBigs@gmail.com with a brief description of the music.
While not easy to pinpoint, fans have described the band’s style as a mash-up of KiD CuDi and The xx. Zoo Legacy’s music isn’t characterized by any single tempo or song structure, but rather offers listeners variety. Whether an upbeat crowd pleaser, moody synth-driven rap, or thoughtful acoustic verse, the band’s music maintains a recognizable style that is unique to Zoo Legacy.
Although “How Much Love” is their newest song, here’s 5 tracks that came out over 6 months ago from Zoo Legacy that display their sound. Out All Night (live) by Zoo Legacy
Welcome to the August 2011 edition of Soundcloud’s Best, a monthly feature spotlighting the top 5 song submissions we received on our soundcloud.
First is a track that came out only an hour ago from Quincy Kwalae, Billy Van and Zach Majors. This track is remix/mashup collab with producer’s Billy Van and Quincy Kwalae and vocalist Zach Majors. They took the lyrics from Chris Brown’s “She Aint You” and Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature” and put them over an original electro-pop-dub beat. Watch the video shows in studio action. She Aint Human (Quincy Kwalae, Billy Van, & Zach Majors) Zoo Legacy is an up and coming indie rock and chill-hop band based out of Ottawa, Canada. Their fans have described Zoo Legacy’s sound as sort of like Kid Kudi meets N.E.R.D meets The xx. Zoo Legacy - How Much Love
Next comes mashup artist DJ Invisiboy with “Drop with the DJ” a mashup tribute to these artists: The Knocks, one of my favorite 90′s 1-hit wonder, Tag Team, and Jesse Marco. Invisiboy continues to impress with his upbeat fun party mashups. Drop with the DJ (The Knocks, Tag Team, Jesse Marco) by DJ Invisiboy Stigmah is a rapper/producer from Atlanta. The song is called “King Of Arcades” and it samples a punk rock song by Lupe Fiasco‘s neo-punk side project, Japanese Cartoon. This probably won’t be the last you hear from Stigmah on BtB as he uses interesting non-hip hop samples in his material from what I have heard so far. Stigmah – King of Arcades
Saving the best for last comes DJ i6, who created a banging party mashup with “Tonight”. This is the first single for DJ i6 off his upcoming mashup album, “Structure and Flow”, his third mashup project, which will be released September 6. One of the best party mashups I have heard in recent memory. Tonight by DJ i6
